1945: The first atomic bomb is tested successfully at the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range in a remote section of desert near Los Alamos, New Mexico. The instant the bomb detonated at 5:30 a.m. that Monday, the atomic age was born, and the world changed forever.

The Trinity test, as it was known, was the culmination of the American effort to win the race against Germany (and, ultimately, the Soviet Union) in building an atomic bomb. A mere three weeks after the test, the United States used atomic bombs to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Well, the situation has become even more bizarre as the sex scandal has been linked to the British spy agency MI5 (from the Times Online):

The intelligence officer, who cannot be named for security reasons, left the service last month after it emerged that his wife was one of the five call girls who took part in the sadomasochistic sex session with Mosley.

SHVUT AMI OUTPOST, West Bank — For two months, Jewish youths have been renovating an old stone house on this muddy hilltop in the northern West Bank. The house is not theirs, however. It belongs to a Palestinian family. And their seizure of it, along with the land around it, for a new settlement outpost is a violation of Israeli law. The police have evicted the group five times, but they keep coming back.

Israel has pledged that it will permit no new settlements in the territory it has occupied since the 1967 war, no more expropriation of Palestinian land and dismantle unauthorized outposts — like this one — erected since March 2001, but it has never applied the muscle needed to do so.

So the settlers continue building a patchwork of communities to try to preclude the drawing of a border between Israel and a future Palestinian state. At the vanguard are the hilltop youth, teenagers like Yedidya, who work to complicate the demographic map ever more.

Note this is well before 9/11, yet the official story by the administration is that it received no notification of any national threat, while in stealth it began comprehensive spying on American citizens, to which the telecom companies objected upon legal grounds as contrary to their obligations to protect consumer rights even from government demands.

Further consider that the government could have issued "warrants" for such if it indeed had any "probable cause" with specific evidence to justify it. The fact that Bush government did not issue warrants, or attempt to get them, proves it was trying to circumvent the law, and the Constitution, to spy on Americans secretly, in order to do so in stealth.

Such a secret pattern by government, before 9/11, could be regarded as evidence of secrecy and providing for its own security, not against foreign terrorists, but from the American people at large, whom its surveillance plans desired to freely sift through.

'USAF struck Syrian nuclear site'

The September 6 raid over Syria was carried out by the US Air Force, the Al-Jazeera Web site reported Friday. The Web site quoted Israeli and Arab sources as saying that two US jets armed with tactical nuclear weapons carried out an attack on a suspected nuclear site under construction.

The sources were quoted as saying that Israeli F-15 and F-16 jets provided cover for the US planes.

The sources added that each US plane carried one tactical nuclear weapon and that the site was hit by one bomb and was totally destroyed.

At the beginning of October, Israel's military censor began to allow the local media to report on the raid without attributing their report to foreign sources. Nevertheless, details of the strike have remained clouded in mystery.

“Now that the cold war is over, Israel has become a strategic liability for the United States,” they write. “Yet no aspiring politician is going to say so in public or even raise the possibility” because the pro-Israel lobby is so powerful. They credit the lobby with shutting down talks with Syria and with moderates in Iran, preventing the United States from condemning Israel’s 2006 war in Lebanon and with not pushing the Israelis hard enough to come to an agreement with the Palestinians. They also discuss Christian Zionists and the issue of dual loyalty.

The authors, two well-respected professors from big name universities, are now being portrayed and anti-Jewish racist. It's like what happen to former President Carter when he wrote: "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid."

Yet, amazingly, nearly everybody knows this is true: pro-Israeli lobbying dominates US foreign policy.

The additional point is made that this is not good for America, although the authors, trying to remain reasonable, point out that they also feel the lobbying by the Cuban groups, the tobacco companies, oil companies, etc. also has extreme influence on USA policies and is also not good for the country.

"Not only is Israeli policy and lobbying fatally flawed," the authors say, "but USA policy is also fatally flawed."

What could be a more reasonable observation than that?

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi on Tuesday decided that the lessons of the incident in Dahariya last month, in which IDF troops shot a Palestinian civilian without justification, would be taught in all IDF commanders' training courses.
Ashkenazi is still considering taking harsher measures against those involved in the affair.

After a summarizing briefing on the incident, the chief of staff said Tuesday that the rampage had exposed serious problems in the IDF's command norms as well as grave failures in the professional and operational aspects.

Ashkenazi said he views with grave severity the incident in which a platoon commander and his troops, who were conducting a routine patrol in the West Bank, kidnapped a Palestinian taxi driver at gunpoint, tied him up, and drove through Dahariya as if they were undercover.

During the drive, one of the soldiers shot a Palestinian man who aroused the commander's suspicion, wounding him moderately. The soldiers then left the town, leaving the man behind without attending to him, and never reported the incident to anyone.

When Palestinian reports of the incident reached the IDF, the soldiers gave a false account of the events.

The commander of the platoon has been indicted for his role in the incident.
